Therefore, the Move Tool (shortcut: V) is primarily used to position layers, selections, and artboards within your workspace. Beyond just dragging objects, it manages how you interact with different elements and helps align multiple objects perfectly.

Core Uses of the Move Tool:

Repositioning Layers: Therefore, select the tool and drag any visible element on your canvas to move it.

Duplicating Elements: Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) while dragging an object to create an instant copy.

Moving Between Documents: You can click an element in one file and drag it into the tab of another document to copy it over.

Nudging with Precision: Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move a selected layer by 1 pixel at a time. Hold Shift with the arrows to move it by 10 pixels.

Constraining Movement: Hold Shift while dragging to move an object in a perfectly straight horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree diagonal line.

Key Settings in the Options Bar:

When the Move Tool is active, several critical options appear at the top of your screen:

Auto-Select: In other words, when checked, clicking an object on the canvas automatically selects its layer. If unchecked, you must manually select the layer in the Layers panel before moving it.

Show Transform Controls: Ticking this box adds a “bounding box” with handles around your selected object, allowing you to resize or rotate it without needing to press Ctrl+T.

Alignment & Distribution: In other words, these icons become active when you have multiple layers selected. They allow you to align objects (e.g., all to the top edge) or space them evenly across your canvas.

Advanced Tool: Content-Aware Move:

In other words, for more complex edits, Photoshop includes the Content-Aware Move Tool (nested under the Healing Brush). It allows you to select an object and move it to a new spot, while Photoshop automatically “heals” the background where the object used to be.

Therefore, the main keyboard shortcut for the Move Tool in Photoshop is V. Pressing V quickly selects the tool from any other tool, allowing you to move layers, selections, or guides within your project.
