Therefore, Cinematic color grading in Photoshop for wedding photos aims to create a rich, polished, and film-like aesthetic that enhances the mood and story of the image. A classic cinematic look often employs the “teal and orange” complementary color scheme, where shadows are cooled (blue/teal) and highlights/skin tones are warmed (orange/yellow).

Therefore, you can achieve this look using several tools and techniques in Photoshop, including Adjustment Layers and the Camera Raw Filter:

Key Techniques for Cinematic Color Grading:

  • Color Grading Panel (in Camera Raw or Lightroom): Therefore, this is one of the most efficient tools. You can independently adjust the hue and saturation for Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights using color wheels.
    • In other words, typically, you’d add a cool tint (blue/cyan) to the Shadows.
    • Therefore, add a warm tint (orange/yellow) to the Highlights to complement the shadows and enhance skin tones.
    • In other words, adjust the Midtones for overall color balance.
  • Selective Color Adjustment Layer: This allows for precise control over existing colors.
    • Therefore, to get the cool shadow look, you can select “Neutrals” or “Blacks” and add Cyan and Blue while reducing Yellow.
    • In other words, to protect or enhance skin tones, select “Reds” and “Yellows” and adjust the Cyan/Red and Yellow/Blue sliders for fine-tuning. For example, you might reduce Cyan in Reds to make skin tones warmer.

  • Curves Adjustment Layer: A crucial step for a cinematic look is adding contrast.
    • Therefore, create a subtle ‘S’ curve on the RGB channel to deepen shadows and brighten highlights.
    • In other words, you can also use the Red, Green, and Blue channels to introduce color shifts: for example, pulling down the blue curve in the shadow area introduces a yellow tint, and lifting it in the highlight area adds a blue tint.
  • Color Lookup (LUTs): LUTs (Look-Up Tables) are pre-made color profiles that can instantly apply complex color grades, often mimicking film stocks or popular cinematic styles.
    • Therefore, you can use the Color Lookup Adjustment Layer to browse and apply existing 3DLUT presets or load custom LUT files.
  • Finishing Touches:
    • Vignette: Adding a subtle vignette (darkening the edges) draws attention to the center and enhances the cinematic feel.
    • Grain: Apply a small amount of film grain using the Camera Raw Filter or a dedicated filter to give the image an authentic, film-like texture.
