Therefore, changing the background in Photoshop 7.0—a classic version of the software—relies on manual selection tools since it lacks the AI-driven “Select Subject” features of modern versions.

However, the most effective method for a clean result is using the Polygonal Lasso Tool or the Extract Filter.

Changing the Image Background in Photoshop 7.0,

Method 1: Using the Lasso Tool (Best for Control)

However, this is the standard way to cut out a subject and place it on a new background.

Open your images: Go to File > Open and open both your main subject photo and your new background.

Select the Lasso Tool: Therefore, Right-click the Lasso Tool in the toolbar and select the Polygonal Lasso Tool (the one with straight edges).

Trace the subject: Zoom in (Ctrl + +) and click around the edge of your subject.

Tip: In other words, use small, frequent clicks for curves. If you make a mistake, hit Backspace to undo the last point.

Close the selection: Click back on your starting point to close the loop. You will see “marching ants” around your subject.

Refine the edges: Go to Select > Feather. Enter 1 or 2 pixels to soften the edge so it doesn’t look like a paper cutout.

Move to the new background: * Select the Move Tool (top right of the toolbar).

In other words, click and drag your selected subject onto the tab or window of the new background image.

Adjust: Press Ctrl + T to resize the subject to fit the new scene. Hold Shift while dragging the corners to keep the proportions correct.

Method 2: Using the “Extract” Filter (Best for Hair/Fur)

In other words, Photoshop 7.0 features a dedicated tool for complex edges called the Extract filter.

Open your image: Go to Filter > Extract.

Highlight the edges: Use the Edge Highlighter Tool (B) to trace the boundary between the subject and the background. Ensure the brush overlaps both the subject and the background slightly.

Fill the subject: Use the Fill Tool (G) to click inside the area you want to keep. It will turn blue.

Preview and OK: Click Preview to check the transparency. If it looks good, click OK.

Place background: Drag a new background image into the workspace and move its layer below your extracted subject in the Layers Palette.

Quick Tips for a Realistic Look:

Match the Lighting: If your subject was taken in bright sunlight, use a background with similar lighting.

Color Balance: Go to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance (Ctrl + B) on your subject layer to help it blend in with the tones of the new background.

Eraser Tool: If there are tiny bits of the old background left, use a soft-edged Eraser Tool (E) at a low opacity to gently blend them away.
