Therefore, Photoshop’s 2026 updates introduced some of the biggest changes to Adjustment Layers in years. Adobe brought several highly requested, Lightroom-inspired global controls directly into the core Photoshop workspace as non-destructive layers.

However, here is a breakdown of what is new and how the workflow has changed.

The New 2026 Adjustment Layers:

Therefore, for years, editors had to jump out of their layer stack and into the Camera Raw filter or Lightroom to access specific tonal and texture sliders. The 2026 update brings these out of beta and drops them directly into the standard Layers panel:

Color & Vibrance: Specifically engineered to neutralize stubborn color casts quickly. It includes an Eyedropper tool within the properties panel so you can click a neutral gray point in your image to instantly correct the white balance. It also features a smart Vibrance slider that targets muted tones while protecting skin tones from becoming oversaturated.

Clarity & Dehaze: Perfect for adding depth to flat or low-contrast images. Dehaze cuts through atmospheric haze or lens glare, while Clarity punches up mid-tone definition to give objects texture and pop.

Grain: Replaces the messy, multi-step workaround of creating a 50% gray layer and applying noise filters. You can now non-destructively dial in the Amount, Size, and Roughness of film grain directly from the Properties panel to unify composites or create a cinematic look.

Pro-Tip: Changing Adjustment Layer Types On the Fly:

Therefore, historically, if you made an adjustment layer, dialed in a complex layer mask, and realized you actually needed a different tool (like switching a Curves layer to a Hue/Saturation layer), you had to delete it and start over.

However, A clever workflow addition allows you to change the type dynamically:

In other words, select your existing adjustment layer in the Layers panel.

However, activate the Adjustment Brush Tool from the toolbar.

In other words, look at the Contextual Task Bar floating on your screen. You will see a dropdown menu displaying the current layer type.

However, click that dropdown and switch it to a different adjustment (e.g., changing Curves to Hue/Saturation). The layer type changes instantly while preserving your layer mask.

However, while the tools are new, the rules of non-destructive editing remain the same:

Accessing Them: Click the Half-Circle Icon at the bottom of the Layers panel, or go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer.

Targeted Adjustments: Every new adjustment layer spawns with a white Layer Mask. If you only want the Clarity or Grain to affect a specific object, select the mask, hit Ctrl/Cmd + I to invert it to black, and use a white brush (B) to paint the effect back in where you want it.

Clipping Masks: If you want an adjustment layer to only affect the single layer directly beneath it (instead of every layer down the stack), hold Alt/Option and click the line between the two layers.
